When most travelers picture Key West, they imagine sandy beaches, colorful sunsets, and the lively energy of Duval Street. However, tucked along South Roosevelt Boulevard, just steps from the ocean, sits one of the island’s most fascinating and underrated attractions: the Fort East Martello Museum. For visitors who love history, folk art, and a touch of the paranormal, this Civil War fort deserves a spot on your Key West itinerary. Operated by the Key West Art & Historical Society, it offers a memorable break from the beach.

A Fort With a Storied Past

Construction on Fort East Martello began in 1862, during the Civil War. The fort was designed to help protect Key West from Confederate naval threats. Although Florida had seceded and many locals supported the Confederacy, Key West remained under Union control throughout the war. Interestingly, the fort was never fully completed and never saw battle, yet its thick brick walls and sturdy central tower have withstood wars, hurricanes, and more than a century and a half of island weather.

By 1950, the Key West Art & Historical Society had cleared away decades of debris and opened the fort as the city’s very first museum. Today it stands on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the best-preserved examples of Martello tower architecture in the country.

What You’ll See Inside

Fort East Martello is packed with exhibits that bring Key West’s colorful past to life. You can browse Civil War relics, learn about the wrecking and cigar-making industries that shaped the Florida Keys, and admire the imaginative metal sculptures of local folk artist Stanley Papio. Climbing to the top of the tower rewards you with lovely views of the surrounding coastline.

Meet Robert the Doll

No visit is complete without seeing the museum’s most famous resident: Robert the Doll. Made around 1904 and once owned by Key West artist Robert Eugene “Gene” Otto, this legendary figure has been the subject of ghostly tales for generations and is considered one of the world’s most haunted objects. Robert has called Fort East Martello home since 1994, where he sits in his glass case greeting curious visitors from all over the world. Just be sure to mind your manners, as local legend says those who disrespect him invite a streak of bad luck.
