Key West Sunsets

Key West is known for it’s sunsets. For a better part of the year the sun dips right into the ocean giving you a direct view of a perfect daily occurrence with an unobstructed view. There are many places in Key West where you can soak up the sunset. Here’s a few ideas of spots or trips you can take for your very own sunset celebration.

Mallory Square – The Sunset Celebration

The end of each day should be a celebration! Key West makes this possible down at Mallory Square. Mallory Square borders the Key West Harbor and is located between the Pier House and Margaritaville’s Resort (formerly the Westin Hotel & Marina). The brick paved space offers plenty of space to walk around or sit and enjoy some of the various shows from our local performers during the hour before sunset.

Key West is a fairly busy cruise ship destination but one of our rules is that the cruise ships must not block the sunset, especially in front of Mallory Square. So cruise ships must depart prior to sunset to give our visiting sunset viewers a perfect place to watch the end of the day. While you enjoy some of the shows like the Cat Man, a juggling unicyclist, a tight rope act there are also local artists displaying their works of art and plenty of local food like conch fritters, smoothies made with fresh fruit, guacamole or fresh popped popcorn.

Whatever you do, make sure you soak up a sunset at Mallory Square at least once while you are here.

Sunset Sails

Another option to get your perfect view of our famous sunset is to join in on a sunset sail adventure from one of the companies that offers sunsets aboard a catamaran or smaller sailboat. The largest catamarans offer island music and often include beer and wine (for adults over 21) and a nice sailing experience as the sun goes down. They also offer a sunset / snorkel combination trip where you can go snorkel at the reef in the late afternoon and then enjoy a drink while you watch the sun go down on your way back to Key West.

There are many types of private charters aboard smaller sailboats or powerboats that offer a sunset cruise. And one of the newest additions to the fleet is a floating tiki bar with a motor so you can enjoy your drinks and cruise around the harbor at the same time!
